I'm always on the lookout for swimming holes and there are lots of good ones in Ulster County. If you are in Woodstock on a hot summer day, consider taking a dip in "The Big Deep". A popular spot for locals, it is aptly named. You can dive in off rocks without fear of touching bottom or do a cannonball off the rope swing (my specialty). All this in a secluded setting, just minutes outside of Woodstock . It's easy to miss though. Look for Gallo's plant nursery on Route 212 and the entrance to Big Deep is on the other side. Here is a google map with the approximate location. Walk down the dirt path to the swimming area and be sure to pack in/pack out!

In 1959 when I was 8, I attended Peter Pan Farm Camp run by Mr. & Ms. Vos in Woodstock, NY. We took a VW bus trip to the Big Deep almost on a daily basis to swim. What memories.

I also attended Peter Pan Farm in the mid-sixties and it was run by the Vos family. I always wondered whether or not the camp or the farm still existed and if my memory was correct that we went riding in the Yasgur fields that became famous in 1969 as the site of the Woodstock festival.

I vaguely recall, when I was a kid, swimming (well, not really, not yet) in "Big Deep". I believe there was also something called "Little Deep", but I don't see any mention of it via Google. I'm 45 now and living NYC, and I'm wanting to try to "get back home", as the saying (or song) goes. I guess I need to go up to Woodstock and take a dip in "Big Deep".
There is a Little Deep! It's on the other side of the Big Deep and is just off Zena Road.
Come back home....everyone eventually does...
:)
PS
I spent hours at the Big Deep today and it was just incredible. There is no water that is more refreshing and vitalizing
there IS a little deep! it's accessible via Zena Road.
I was at the Big Deep today for a few hours with my two dogs.
There is no water that is more refreshing or revitalizing than the Deep!
